Pando the Aspen Clone is the largest living organism on earth, the largest tree by weight and landmass, and the largest aspen clone.
The name comes from the latin "I spread", and the 47,000 invididual trees that comprise it are not individual trees – they are all clones that share the same root system.
We first heard about this amazing tree a few years back when the Weather Channel or some other news outlet did a story on whether it would survive or not.
Once we heard that, it moved up high on our list, and we knew that we wanted to hit it during peak fall color season.
The Forest Service has started to fence much of the grove to protect new growth from overgrazing by the local deer, elk, and free-range cows found here in the Fishlake National Forest with hopes to give Pando a chance to replenish the dying trees with new growth.
We definitely arrived at peak time, with so much color that it hurts your eyes and the photos look completely fake.
The Friends of Pando organization has published a big list of facts HERE, enjoy.
We HIGHLY recommend a visit here – Pando, Fish Lake, the entire area is absolutely gorgeous and not what you would expect to find in Utah.
