The Sauk Mountain Trail is a great moderate hike in the North Cascades if you don’t mind switchbacks.
Luckily for us, we don’t, and this hike is right up our alley. Only 3.7 miles with 1,105 feet of elevation, and 360 views of the Cascades? Yes, yes, and yes please.
There’s an alternate trail that hits the saddle and then drops down to Sauk Lake, but we’re here for the panoramic views not an underwhelming small mountain lake. To the peak!
An early start is a must, as it’s a long slow drive up the bumpy switchback mountain roads to the parking area.
Packs, poles, provisions, presto.
The trail itself is pretty meh, dirt switchbacks up a steep mountainside, but the views are absolutely stunning.
Before you crest the saddle, all you see is out to the west, with the occasional glimpse of Olympic National Park through the haze.

Higher up, you see Rainier to the south, and once you summit you have the full 360 of the Cascades – simply magnificent.
This is one of few moderate hikes in the Cascades, we definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something other than the roadside easy strolls, but be warned – it was like ants marching up as we headed down. Start early to get parking and some solitude!
