Yauco would be an otherwise unimpressive town in southwestern Puerto Rico – but they have a very smart marketing department with their Yaucromatic idea!
Known for being Puerto Rico’s coffee hub, the city is also known as the Taino Capitol in reference to the Indians who originally inhabited the island.
After Hurricane Maria devastated much of Puerto Rico, the marketing department got the town’s artists together and painted an area of the town with crazy bright and geometric colors and called it Yaucromatic.
This is what brings the tourists (even other Puerto Ricans) to Yauco for their Instagram and Facebook-worthy selfies.
We don’t Instagram since we just blog for friends and family, but this is indeed what brought us here on our drive from Ponce to Cabo Rojo.
Get ready for some up and down, the entire area is built on a steep slope – great for adding layers to photos, not so great if you’re out of shape. Garmin GPS and Google Maps both think a few of the staircases are roads, and will try to lead you astray.
One of the other things we noticed here was an abundance of feral yet friendly cats, where we have noticed an abundance of dogs everywhere else. Must. Pet.
Plenty of creativity here including some amazing artwork from abast_art, we would list this one a must-do if you’re traveling along the southwest coast.
