Who knew that there were waterfalls in Illinois?
We stumbled across Starved Rock State Park while looking for campgrounds close to our family loop route.
Multiple canyons with waterfalls leading down to the Illinois River, and lots of hiking to be had.
The campground is separate from the canyons and waterfalls, but it’s only a few minutes to drive from your campsite to the good hiking. We were able to bushwhack through the woods and across the road to do some hiking, but we wouldn’t recommend it over just doing the short drive to the separate trailheads.
We highly recommend Starved Rock State Park to anybody in Chicagoland wanting to get away to somewhere other than the Wisconsin Dells.

Starved Rock Campground
A very nice State Park campground with nicely spaced sites set deep in the woods.
