I wanted to bang this one out since it’s the last 14er in the overall Breckenridge area. I slept in until 4:15, and hit the trail about 6am, just in time to get a great sunrise while climbing Mount Spalding.
The loop isn’t too bad, and when you get an early start there’s not many cars and tourists at the top so you can get a selfie without crowds.

Depth of Field

Depth of Field
Layers and layers of Colorado mountains stretch into the distance from Mount Evans. Summit Lake is barely visible below, along with the auto road that brings the tourists who aren’t willing to do the hike.

Of course I had to print out a Mount Evans sheet!

Posing with the ‘summit’ sign, although the sign at the parking lot is only at 14,130 feet of elevation, 134 feet below the actual summit.

Rock Fields

Rock Fields
This is the rock field you get to scramble through if you choose to come down the northeast slope instead of retracing the route over Mount Spalding, visible in the background.
