When you think of a place where there are nothing but rich people, you tend to think Beverly Hills.
But when you think of a place where the really, really, really rich people are – there’s Monaco.
Since our trip to Menton was going to take us past Monaco, we arranged to spend a night and an entire day wandering and seeing the sights.
And there are plenty of sights to see!
From the amazing Port Hercule with its staggering array of multi-gazillion dollar yachts, to “The Casino”, to the beautiful Riviera scenery, it’s definitely a must-see that should be on everyone’s list.
Since it’s shoulder season, we managed to score a hotel room right on the water, complete with spa and all the goodies. If it weren’t for the wallet-sucking room rate, Colette would have never left!

The World’s Most Famous Bend
A monument at the Fairmont Hairpin along the Monaco Formula 1 race route.
Architecture
There is one “Casino” in the world, and this is it.
Weekend Beater
This guy’s weekend beater is parked outside the Monte Carlo Casino.
The ‘Burbs
If you don’t have the bankroll to live in Monte Carlo, you can always live in the Monaco suburbs…
Trade Winds
I’m not an artist – but I think this sculpture is probably some sort of a god protecting trading vessels.
Typical Statue
This statue totally reminds me of the Gorton’s Fish Sticks logo! Why is it that every culture depicts their king/whoever as an intrepid explorer or sailor?
Very Mediterranean
This looks more like Italy to me than the Riviera!
Classic View
Now THIS is the view that I expect from the Riviera!
Welcome To Town
Barely visible as you whizz past at 160km/h in your Ferrari… Luckily we walked past at 6km/h so we saw our country change.
Walk This Way
Honestly, if you’re walking and you need directions, you’re not the people Monte Carlo is trying to attract…
Hotel de Paris Monte Carlo
If you have to ask how much a room here is…
Red Sky
The red lighting on the masts is a work of art. With all of the neon, stainless, chrome, and overdone money-laundering pow-in-your-face, here’s a very good use of night lighting!
Arriving in Style
When your gangplank has illuminated floorboards… I believe that means you have arrived. We called this the Zuck boat since we saw a crewmember wearing a grey hoodie getting on and off, but Zuck would probably have something twice this size.
Self Confidence
Should I take the Bentley, the Ferrari, or the classic Fiat 500 to the marina tonight? The short guys picked the first two, the self-confident guy brought this beauty down.
Sarastar
If you’re going to have a megayacht, you need to have an amazing light setup!
Downtime
Wine, dark chocolate, and bubbles! Our room at the Hotel Port Palace in Monaco was seriously pimp. Colette would have stayed here forever if it wasn’t for the steep room rate!
