Instead of Mom just flying in for Shelby and Tom’s wedding and flying back out, we decided that she should make it a mini-vacation.

With a few days to spare on the front end, after picking her up at Denver International Airport we immediately headed towards our rental condo in Keystone with a mandatory stop at Loveland Pass (11,990 feet elevation) for photos. Quite an oxygen change for her going from sea level to twelve thousand!

There was also time for a short hike around the Sapphire Point trail overlooking the Dillon Reservoir, a great way to take in some of the fall colors.
After a night in Keystone we headed to our rental condo in Vail, basecamp for the next few days of the wedding weekend. Close enough to the wedding venue to be handy, but just far enough away to not be in the kids hair.

After the wedding weekend we headed south through Leadville (elevation 10,152 feet) to Breckenridge where mom and I did the Country Boy Mine tour while Colette chilled in a coffee shop in town. Continuing down the gorgeous Upper Arkansas River Valley, it’s a hard left after Buena Vista and headed east towards Pikes Peak.

Mom finally got to do a 14er, although it was as a passenger in the Jeep and not lugging a backpack full of stuff up the mountain. She didn’t seem to think it was too tough…
After Pikes we headed down to a rental cabin in Beulah Valley for a few days, with a stop at Bishops Castle to check out the craziness.
Relaxation and downtime in Beulah is over and it’s time to pack her up and ship her off again, while I head back into the mountains to climb Mount of the Holy Cross and do some backpacking with the kids and Dasani.
I’ll get Sapphire Point, Pikes Peak, Country Boy Mine, and Bishops Castle posted soon.

  1. It’s great to see your fantastic adventures across this beautiful country. I hope you make it to West Virginia which has so much to do. We live in Pittsburgh with our 3 boys so we may be a bit biased. πŸ™‚

    1. West Virginia was on the plan for 2023, but we got sidetracked with a million other sites and sights! It is probably on the 2025 list as 2024 will likely be more time in the Pacific Northwest. Great to hear from you guys!
