We had to drop the car off outside Frankfurt, so we figured we would make a weekend of it.
We had seen plenty of media on Rhine river cruises, and the time and location was right for a day cruise.
Mainz makes a great overnight point, as the K-D cruise line departs from nearby Rudesheim.
There’s not much to say about Mainz that we haven’t marveled over in other German towns – the cathedral, half-timbered houses, and classic architecture.
Nice to see for an afternoon and evening, and tomorrow morning we’re off on the boat!
Little Green Walking Man
The Germans, being the creative people that they are – the word for their ‘walk on green’ signal is literally ‘Little Green Walking Man’. Not very creative, but very funny.
Pink Cathedral
Your eyes aren’t decieving you, that sure is pink.
Religion Endures
Amazing religious artifacts from long before our great-grandparents were even thought of.
Out Of The Crypt
Walking out of the crypt below the Mainz Cathedral
In Your Face
That’s a lot of color and a lot of symmetry – BAM – in your face.
Three Floors of Ugly
Three square, symmetrical floors of ugly. I’m sure the townsfolk of the day thought the same but were afraid to speak up lest their heads be chopped off.
Window With a View
Sitting in our hotel window at the Hilton Mainz looking out over the Rhine – this does not suck!
Saint Cristoph’s
Vivid images showing the bombing of St Cristoph’s during World War II and its reconstruction.
Classic German
If you think of classic German half-timbered town, this is exactly what you think of!
