The fishing village of Honningsvag is our first real stop on our voyage north on the Havila Capella from Tromso to Kirkenes.
Honningsvag is a popular stop for ships due to being on the same island as the North Cape – the farthest north in Europe that you can drive by car.
With a 1000 foot high cliff having a large flat plateau on top and views out over the Barents Sea, bus tours from Honningsvag up to North Cape are extremely popular with tourists passing through on the ships. The previous storm and current gale force winds shut down the tours while we were in port, much to the dismay of many of our shipmates.
We did two separate trips wandering through town, with a quick stop back at the ship in the middle to grab lunch.
Not much to see except colorful houses, working boats, and lots of snow. But still very cool to spend time among the locals, imagining what life must be like out here on the edge of the Arctic Ocean.
Definitely recommend hopping off at Honningsvag and leisurely poking around the town, or hopping on a bus and heading up to North Cape.
