We picked Herrsching to round out our Ammersee weekend for one big reason – the Andechs Monastery biergarten!
There are few attractions in Herrsching, the big draw is just being a mostly-quiet little seaside town close to Munich.
But it boasts beautiful sunsets, easy access via both train and boat, and of course the monastery.
We gorged ourselves on pork and beer after our hike up the hill, and felt absolutely no guilt.
This was Colette’s first time to a real biergarten, and the crowd and beverages did not disappoint!

Typical German countryside, viewed from the Andechs Monastery

Andechs Monastery

Andechs Monastery
The must-do stop on the east side of the Ammersee, the Andechs Kloster. A biergarten is the major draw, and of course the beautiful views and old architecture.

Just Reward

Just Reward
Pork knuckle, pork loin, sauerkraut, pretzel, and of course – two 1-liter beers. Well worth the hike up to the monastery for this!

Crazy Color

Crazy Color
The crazy color of the clouds just doesn’t come out in a photo. We had both never seen the purples before, so this is more of a memory photo than a front-page gallery shot.

Ammersee Sunset

Ammersee Sunset
Watching the sun drop over the Ammersee. The sky stayed light forever – like a typical Northern Michigan or Minnesota sunset.

Young Girl of the Sea

Young Girl of the Sea
Seejungfrau – literally "Young girl of the sea". I don’t know the story of the statue, but worth a photo nonetheless.

The Kurpark castle is a photogenic little beauty.
