An amazing weekend visiting (revisiting for Colette) Heidelberg.
A must-do for anyone visiting Germany, and even a must-do for Germans judging by the other visitors we encountered over the weekend.
Heidelberg has everything a fairy-tale town needs – a castle on a hill, a big river, old buildings, and tourists to keep the economy going.
No need for a long writeup since Colette did a great one during her 2011 visit!
We also stopped through several other towns on our way home, posts here:
The Long Way In
It’s a long entrance into the Heidelberg Castle. All the better for archers to pick off inbound enemy soldiers!
A King’s View
View of Heidelberg and the Neckar River from the castle.
An Eye For An Eye
Surprise
This horse statue sure looks surprised.
Creativity
I don’t know who the artist was that came up with these crazy statues in the Palace Gardens, but I think there may have been drugs involved.
Serene City
The sun lights up the Old Bridge over the Neckar
The Schloss
Wars, fires, and time – and a remarkably good amount of the Heidelberg Castle still stands tall.
Locked In
A riverboat passes through the locks on the Neckar River.
Fairy Tale Houses
The houses on the north side of the Neckar River are very fairy-tale.
Going to Church
This is a crazy piece of art to have inside a church!
The Phantom
An organist was doing a masterful job on this massive pipe organ inside the Jesuitkitche. I couldn’t help but think of Phantom of the Opera the entire time we were inside.
Sparkles
A fun photo inside the elevator at our hotel.
Bridge Monkey
The famous Bridge Monkey at Heidelberg’s Old Bridge.
Hollander Hof
Our hotel couldn’t have been better situated as we looked out directly onto the bridge.
Bridge by Night
The Karl Theodor bridge is amazing at night.
Bruckentor
At the south end of the Old Bridge, the famous city entry.
The Philosopher
A quick uphill walk from the Old Bridge takes you to the Philosopher’s Way, a beautiful stroll with great views of the city.
