Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, and we had high expectations after watching the Rick Steves special on Youtube.
After checking into our AirBnB and dropping the rental car, we spent the afternoon with a long leg stretch checking off a few of the pushpins on our list.
It becomes evident quickly that Bergen is city city, tourist port, and a few good bits and pieces thrown in here and there.
It’s high season for tulips, and the flowers are absolutely amazing everywhere. They’re so stunning that they look completely fake, and so vivid that I had to desaturate color on some photos because they hurt my eyes.
We had very few pushpins on our map for Bergen, this was really just a chance to slowly explore and decompress before hitting the train to Oslo and flying home.
The narrow alleys and crooked wooden building of the Bryggen district is cool to see, and there’s plenty of marina action if you’re a boat connoisseur.
The tourist crowds are overwhelming, and there’s an entire carnival set up on the waterfront with rides and blaring music.
Old-world European charm you will not find here.
This is definitely not on our return list.
But – there’s something for everyone if you take the time to explore.
