Avalanche Lake via Trail of the Cedars is the number one hike within Glacier National Park, and with good reason.
The Trail of the Cedars Loop is an ADA-accessible loop through tall stands of western red cedar and western hemlock, and this loop is amazing all by itself. Massive trunks abound on both sides of the boardwalk, and the crowns of the trees stretch up as high as you can see.
Add in the trail along gorgeous Avalanche Creek up to the glacial blue waters of Avalanche Lake and you quickly see why this is such an iconic hike.
You will have no peace and quiet on this trail unless you start before sunrise, and then you need to be on high alert for bears. We came across a black bear with her cub in the middle of the trail, but she didn’t view us as a threat and they made their way up the hill after a minute or two.
There are a few rooted spots along the trail, and if you choose to meander along the shoreline instead of the trail to the east end of the lake we recommend a sturdy hiker or boot.
This hike will definitely be included in our Glacier itineraries wrap-up post (hopefully tomorrow), even if you only have a day in the Park it should be high on the list!
